DOL (Direct-On-Line) Starter

Induction motors require specific starting methods due to their high inrush current during startup. This high starting current can potentially damage the motor windings, which is why different types of starters are used. One of the simplest and most traditional methods is the Direct-On-Line (DOL) start, where the motor is directly connected to the power supply. In this setup, the motor starts at full load with the full line voltage applied directly to its terminals.

This method causes the motor to draw a large amount of current, making it suitable only for motors up to 4 kW, with a maximum motor size of 10 kW. For larger motors, DOL starting can cause significant voltage drops in the supply circuit, which can impact other equipment.

Despite this, the DOL system is considered the most cost-effective method for starting pumps and motors. It is ideal for small submersible pumps, deep well pumps, and booster sets with surface pumps. This method is best suited for stable power supplies, mechanically rigid systems, and well-dimensioned shafts. It is widely used due to its simplicity and minimal temperature rise within the motor during startup.

Star Delta Panels

When large induction motors are started directly online, they can cause severe voltage drops due to high starting current. To mitigate this, a reduced voltage is initially applied, and full supply voltage is connected once the motor nears its full speed. Star Delta starting is one of the most effective methods to achieve this.

This system uses two contactors:

  • One to start the motor at a reduced voltage using the star configuration

  • Another to switch the motor to delta configuration for full voltage operation

Using Star Delta Panels reduces starting current to one-third compared to DOL, minimizing electrical and mechanical stress. This method is especially useful for pump motors that require gentle startup.
