PF panels are automatic control systems comprising a microprocessor-based controller and multiple capacitors. These panels can be turned on or off automatically on an individual basis. They ensure a consistently high power factor by compensating for the reactive power requirements of machinery. The primary function of a PF panel (Power Factor Panel) is to improve the power factor.
Power factor is defined as the ratio of active power to apparent power and is a key parameter for measuring electrical efficiency. The power factor can be improved whenever necessary by automatically switching the required capacitor bank units on or off. In today’s scenario, with rising electricity costs, it becomes essential to reduce expenses by operating electrical systems at the desired power factor level. This helps to avoid penalties that result from a continuous drop in power factor. PF panels are thus crucial in controlling industrial power consumption by stabilizing the power factor.
The microcontroller in the panel continuously monitors the power factor at various stages. If the power factor drops below 0.9 (lagging) during peak load hours, the capacitor banks are automatically activated to correct the factor.
