Starter Panels
A starter is a device used to regulate the electrical power supplied to specific equipment, typically motors. Starters serve key functions such as starting, stopping, reversing, and protecting motors. They represent the most fundamental form of motor control panels.
A typical starter panel may also include a circuit breaker to safeguard the motor against overload conditions. These panels are specially designed electromechanical switches, similar to relays — with the critical distinction being that starters include overload protection, while standard relays do not.
Certain equipment requires a high current at startup for proper functioning. This surge can damage motor windings or cause significant voltage drops. A starter is necessary to limit this high inrush current, ensuring the motor starts safely by reducing the initial supply voltage.
In addition to managing startup current, starters also provide protection against overload, single phasing, and low voltage conditions. Depending on the control method, starters are categorized as either manually operated or electrically operated devices.
Types of Starters
Based on different operational techniques, the most commonly used starters include:
1. Stator Resistance Starter
Uses external resistance connected in series with the stator windings to apply reduced voltage.
Simple in construction and cost-effective.
Drawback: significant power loss due to resistance dissipation.
2. Auto Transformer Starter
Employs a three-phase auto transformer to reduce the applied voltage.
Offers higher terminal voltage for a given starting current than other reduced-voltage methods.
Suitable for medium to large motors.
3. Star Delta Starter
The most widely used reduced-voltage starter.
Economical and maintenance-free.
Starts the motor in star configuration, then switches to delta once operational speed is achieved.
4. Direct-On-Line (DOL) Starter
Connects the motor directly to the power supply without reducing voltage.
Provides full voltage startup and overload, single phasing, and low voltage protection.
Highly reliable and commonly used.
Limitation: high starting current draw.
5. Soft Starter
Uses semiconductor switches to reduce the starting current.
A form of reduced-voltage starter with smooth ramp-up.
Often paired with variable frequency drives (VFDs) to control motor speed, especially for large motors.
